Water Pump Frequently Asked Questions

Posted by Rod Judge on

The most popular choice for residential water pump applications is our range of electric Monza Pumps. Choose from three popular types:

Domestic water pumps are an integral part of any home water system. Everyone takes for granted the water coming from a tap or the flush of the toilet, but it is in fact the efficiency of the water pump that maintains this water flow.

water pumpA water pump is maintains the pressure and flow of water in outlets across the home, e.g taps, showers, toilets etc. Domestic water pumps can be used in many different ways. E.g. your water at home may run from a water tank, in which case you will require a water pump to utilise the water (see rainbank pumps).

The domestic water pump will pump water from the tank into your taps and appliances in the home that require water.

Some residential areas have low mains water pressure. If you have poor water pressure at home then a domestic water pump can be added to the system to improve the water pressure. Domestic water pumps commonly use your home's electricity to run, however there are also petrol or diesel water pumps which are used in more rural applications where electricity may not be available.

Which water pump is best for rural use?

Petrol pumps are lightweight, portable and inexpensive and designed for moving water from one place to another, where gravity feed isn’t applicable, particularly useful for rural applications.

They’re most commonly used in a rural setting where electricity is not available.

FEATURES TO LOOK FOR

When choosing a petrol pump that's suitable for your rural water needs, look for features such as:

  • Electronic ignition
  • Pressure
  • Flow
  • Suction
  • Portability

When choosing a spot for your petrol pump, not only does the pump need to be close by, but for safety, take note of:

  • Adequate ventilation
  • Sound/noise travel

BENEFITS

The benefits of a petrol water pump are:

  • No electricity connection required for use
  • Suitable for domestic and commercial/rural use
  • Portability
  • Efficient

USES

Petrol and/or diesel water pumps are ideal for use in:

  • Pumping from a well or dam
  • crop irrigation
  • In the event of a power outage or electrical failure
  • For Fire water pumps

How long do they last?

Pending quality and application, in general a quality residential pump should operate without any major issue for approximately 15 years.

Here are some tips to help lengthen the lifespan of your rainwater pump:

Every 3 months

  • Check roof and guttering for debris and trim back any overhanging branches.
  • Flush pump to confirm it’s working properly and clean it.
  • Check and clean leaf filters, tank inlets and insect-proofing.

Every 6 months

  • Check the structural integrity of the pipework and that all connections are secured and water tight.
  • Check the water tank’s interior to see if there is any insect or animal access. Especially mosquito larvae and close off any entrance points.

Every 2 years

  • Check for sediment in the water tank and safely clean.

What can cause a water pump to fail?

There are several points at which a rainwater pump can fail, including:

  • Blockages from debris or sediment
  • Impellers may fail
  • Seals may fail over time
  • Electrical fault
  • Dry run failure
